What is a ‘Slab’ – Definition – The Sports Card Glossary

We’re not talking about a slab of concrete. In the world of card collecting, a slab is the plastic holder used by grading card companies to encapsulate and protect a sports card (or Pokemon card, magazine, comic.. whatever sort of memorabilia was authenticated and graded).

While the appearance of a slab may differ in the details for each grading card company, the general shape is consistent.

On the front, you’ll see information about the card itself, such as the manufacturer, set and card name and number. You’ll also see the grade assigned to the card and the certificate number for the graded card. Below the card information, you’ll see the front of the card itself.

On the back, you’ll see additional information such as a QR code that takes you to the information page for the graded card. Below, you’ll see the back of the card.
